Yes, you can create custom word lists by exporting words with SpellPundit. SpellPundit spends considerable time arranging words based on their likelihood of being asked (rather than their difficulty). Words with a higher probability of appearing in competitions are placed in the earlier word lists (e.g., Word List 2). Conversely, words with a lower chance of being asked (such as the spelling of a small fishing village in Asia) appear in later lists (e.g., Word List 9). Common words used in daily life are featured in the initial word lists, while words of historical or scientific significance are found in intermediate lists. Rare words with minimal relevance (such as those even Google might not recognize) are placed in the final lists. With over a decade of experience tracking spelling bee competitions, SpellPundit frequently adjusts its word lists to reflect the evolving nature of these events.

The number of words a speller can prepare in a day depends on several factors, including their experience level and the difficulty of the words. For a new speller, preparation might range from 50 to 100 words per hour. Intermediate spellers typically can prepare around 100 to 200 words per hour. Advanced spellers may be able to prepare between 200 and 400 words per hour. Spellers who are well-versed in roots, rules, and language patterns may be able to prepare up to 1,000 words or more per hour. We have seen some exceptional spellers who prepared about 1625 words per hour (13,000 words per day) as stated in this BBC interview (https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-57773502).

This has evolved over the years. Currently, we conduct two spelling bee competitions annually: one in March or April and another in October or November. The primary purpose of the October/November competition is to help spellers prepare for the upcoming spelling bee season, which typically kicks off in November. The main benefit of these competitions is that they allow spellers to gain a deeper understanding of how spelling bees work. These events function as mini-leagues, providing valuable experience for major competitions like the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
The preparation required depends on the specific goal. For instance, if the goal is to win the Scripps School Spelling Bee, about an hour a day for a month before the competition may be sufficient. This generally involves mastering around 450 words, with a few additional ones. If the goal is to win the Scripps County/District Spelling Bee, two hours per day for about four months might be enough. This would involve mastering the 450 school words and a couple of thousand words from Words of the Champions. Preparing for a Scripps Regional Bee typically requires a few hours per day over the course of a year, generally requiring the mastery of more than 20,000 words. For those aiming for the National Spelling Bee, several hours a day over multiple years would be necessary, with the goal of mastering approximately 100,000 words.
Additionally, there are significant regional variations. The preparation needed to win a regional bee in a place like Wyoming may be much less than what’s required to win in more competitive regions, such as Dallas or San Francisco.

If the British spelling is listed in the Unabridged dictionary, then the British spelling is accepted. For example, for color, the British spelling colour is listed in the Unabridged dictionary and it will be accepted.

No, currently we don't offer spelling bee coaching. However, with the support of parents, most spellers can effectively prepare for spelling bees on their own, without the need for a coach.
